Summer Programme last few events
London History Walk 4: City Fountains and Gardens
Date: Tues 27 August 2024
Time: 10.15am for a 10.30am start
Meeting point: Turn right out of Barbican station; to avoid obstructing the station entrance, we will congregate around the corner in Long Lane to the side of Pret A Manger.
This walk evolved from a presentation given to the Shape of London group in February 2024 about the history of clean drinking water provision in London and the establishment of the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Association in the middle of the 19th century. It is a repeat of a walk undertaken as part of the Shape of London summer term programme on 18 June 2024.
The preparation for this talk included a physical exploration to find the remaining drinking fountains in the City of London. This walk visits a select few of these installations and some old water pumps, together with a number of City gardens, including Postman’s Park.
The walk should take two and a half hours with a finish at an appropriate Underground Station (possibly Bank or Aldgate), subject to progress and stamina.

Board Games 3: The Elephant Inn
Date: Wed 28 August 2024
Time: 2.00pm until late
Venue: Elephant Inn, Ballard’s Lane, North Finchley, London N12 8NR (corner of Hutton Grove, 2 doors down from Waitrose)
Currently the group play Triominoes, Quirkle and Rummikub. Once we get tired of these, we will decide what to play next!
Anyone who has played Dominos can easily play Triominoes. It’s a similar game but with numbers on three sides instead of two.
Quirkle is easy enough to play – even for children – but for adults it requires a lot of strategy. Players take turns laying tiles down on the table with the aim of making lines of colours or shapes to earn the most points, while trying to block their opponents.
Two to six people can play Rummikub. Each player starts with 14 tiles, and the aim is to be the first to play all the tiles from your rack by forming them into sets. The most exciting part of the game is manipulation – rearranging or adding to sets already on the table.
Come along to our Summer Programme taster sessions at the Elephant Inn. To book, please contact Mary Michaelides – 07914 081 662 – marymichael46@gmail.com
